Cheese Flights

Writer and Educator Tenaya Darlington aka (Madame Fromage) asked me to illustrate 3 scenes related to the concept of cheese in flight. I created these three images and Tenaya crafted some beautifully written words to pair with them. All proceeds from the sales went to the Daphne Zepos Teaching Award which is a scholarship devoted to promoting learning and travel within the cheese industry.

In-Flight Cheese Board

“One grey-green evening, you look up from a book to see a bird on your windowsill with a silver knife in its beak. At first you shrink back, then the bird slowly turns and reveals a cheese board tucked between its wings. A secret admirer has sent you a hunk of golden gouda full of glittering crystals. When you taste it, the sky changes colors. Yellow, then tangerine, then ruby. The bird flies away, leaving you with a window-sill dinner party for one.

You tell your neighbors & soon everyone orders cheese boards delivered by birds. Each evening, you look out & see whole families seated by their window sills, sipping wine, nibbling & watching autumn colors play in the sky. For a whole season, no one eats dinner alone.”

Air Fromage

“Pretend this is a postcard. It arrives by mail & invites you to look up into the sky. Whatever country you dream of visiting sends a small plane to fly over your house. The pilot drops a picnic full of local goods — cheese, wine, preserves — and it lands at your feet in a basket. You sit down to feast & are transported immediately to a different landscape. Perhaps it is a brambly coast with a few grazing goats. Or a rugged hillside orchard. You will now dream of this place & participate in the fall harvest every time you sleep.”

Cheese in Space

“Months of isolation have turned you into a housebound snail. You miss the close-hugging of friends. You feel your imagination dwindling. One night, you slime your way up the stairs to bed & find the moon waiting for you. The entire moon. In your room. She is accompanied by an ambassador who hands you a pearlescent space suit. You become luminous. Immediately, you know what to do. You float up & follow the moon into the darkness. First, the two of you fly over fields that have been demolished by fire & wind. You restore crops & leave each farmer a drawer of gold silverware. Then you whirl around the world & slip glowing wheels of cheese onto empty tables. In parks, in backyards, in somber kitchens. Before dawn, you & the moon ascend high into the night sky to share a glass of Prosecco & enjoy the golden glow from below.”

Maker to Monger

Columbia Cheese - importers of cheese of distinction from all over Europe - invited me to design a t-shirt for them to illustrate their mantra “Maker to Monger.” The image shows a cheese maker in traditional swiss garb along with a cheese monger carrying a stack of Columbia-imported cheese. A Symbol of the old world and the new world working together to preserve traditional food ways for generations to come.

High Street

For High Street’s new concept at Franklin Table near the campus of University of Pennsylvania I illustrated menu items, ingredients and Philadelphia icons that were then printed on substrate and used to decorate the space.
